The two screens your monetization settings actually produce: the locked chapter, and the wallet with everything it has to say about a Patreon membership.

Every setting in this section comes out in one of two places. It is worth looking at both before you go live, because this is the side your readers judge.

A locked chapter

The opening paragraphs are shown and fade out into a panel. How many paragraphs is the Locked preview paragraphs setting in chapter access.

Below that, the panel changes with who is looking:

Signed out, as above: log in, or create an account.
Signed in with enough coins: the price and a button to unlock.
Signed in without enough: the price, and a way to buy more.
A qualifying Patreon member: nothing. The chapter is simply open.
A chapter that unlocks itself: a countdown saying when it opens, if you are using the timed rule.

Every line of text on that panel can be reworded in Theme Options, Text and Labels, including the signed-out line.

The wallet

The page readers reach from their account menu. Balance on the left, membership and packages on the right.

The picture above is a site mid-setup, which is why it is showing two notices a finished site would not: a Patreon panel saying the integration is not configured (only administrators see that one), and a test-mode banner printing the Stripe test card number so you do not have to look it up.

The Wallet Label setting decides what this page is called throughout the site, for owners who would rather say Balance, or Coins, or Account.

The membership panel

The panel above the packages has a different thing to say for each state a Patreon membership can be in, and getting these right is most of why the Patreon setup is worth doing carefully.

State	What the reader is told
Never joined	What a membership costs and what it opens, with a join link
Active	That it is working, and what they get each month
Ending	That it lapses on a date, and that they can still read until then
Below your minimum	What they pay, what is needed, and how to move up
No qualifying tier	That their pledge has no tier entitled to access
Payment declined	That Patreon could not take the payment
Not verified	That the check failed, with nothing blamed on them
No membership	That the linked account has no membership

The difference between the last two matters. “We could not check” and “you are not a member” look the same to a reader if you write them the same way, and only one of them is their problem.

If your Patreon connection is incomplete, administrators see an extra line on this panel explaining what is missing. Readers do not see it.

Before you go live

Look at both screens signed out, and then signed in as an ordinary reader account. Not as yourself: an administrator can read every chapter, so the paywall never appears for you and you will conclude it is broken, or that it works, on no evidence at all.
