Moving an existing site

For JormunTL 1.2.0

Bringing a library across from another JormunTL site, or converting a Madara or Fictioneer library in place.

Needs the JormunTL Transfer plugin, installed from JormunTL ▸ Install Plugins. It lives at Tools ▸ JormunTL Transfer.

The JormunTL Transfer screen

It does two different jobs.

Moving a JormunTL site

Exports the whole site as one archive: settings, novels, chapters, comments and cover images. Import that archive on the new site and you have the same site.

This is the one for a staging site going live, or a change of host.

Migrating from Madara or Fictioneer

Converts an existing library in place, leaving the original untouched. Your old posts stay exactly where they are; new JormunTL novels and chapters are created alongside them.

That matters more than it sounds. It means a migration that goes wrong is not a catastrophe: nothing was overwritten, so you delete what was created and try again.

Either way

  1. Back up first. Not because this is dangerous, but because a migration is exactly the moment you want a backup and cannot make one afterwards.
  2. Run it on a copy if the site is live and has readers.
  3. Check the covers. Images are the part most likely to need attention, because they may be on a path the new site knows nothing about.
  4. Check your permalinks before announcing anything. Chapter URLs are configurable in performance and URLs, and links you have already published should keep working.
