Accounts & Registration

The Accounts and Registration card: email delivery with its test button, the verification switch, and the login style

Email Delivery is the first thing on the card and the most important thing on it. It carries a Send test email button, which sends to your admin address and records the result.

Press it before you touch anything else here. WordPress cannot reliably send mail on its own, and everything below assumes it can. The full explanation, including which sending services have usable free tiers, is in email delivery.

Require Email Verification should stay off until that test passes. With it on and mail broken, new readers are flagged unverified, never receive a link, and cannot buy anything, while existing accounts and staff carry on working. That combination is why the fault is usually reported by a stranger rather than noticed by you.

Login Style is a modal over the page, or a page of its own. The modal is the default and means a reader signing in never loses the chapter they were reading.

Use Themed Login replaces WordPress’s own login screen with one that matches your site.

Security & Anti-Spam

The Security card: CAPTCHA provider, site key and secret key

CAPTCHA Provider is none, Turnstile, hCaptcha or reCAPTCHA, with a site key and a secret key from whichever you pick.

Cloudflare Turnstile is the least unpleasant of the three for readers, and free. Leave the provider at none while you are setting the site up, or you will spend the afternoon proving you are human to your own site.

Avatars

The Avatars card: preset avatars and the active packs

Preset Avatars gives readers a set to choose from instead of relying on Gravatar, which most readers do not have. Active Packs picks which sets are offered.

Matters more the more community features you run. On a site with comments and reviews, a wall of identical default avatars makes the conversation look dead.
