Chapter 27: Assassination
Hearing Ye Kong’s words, the Lu brothers immediately sprang into action. They called out their mother and little sister hiding in the room, grabbed a few worthless clothes, and left home that very night.
Lu Jun had a very close friend living in the city, so the group went to his friend’s house. After arranging everything, Ye Kong prepared to go to the Treasure Spring Pavilion.
“Eighth Young Master, be careful! I noticed when Xu You was dying, his words seemed to have hidden meaning.” Lu Jun was indeed meticulous despite his rough appearance. Xu You’s final curse combined with his mocking gaze likely meant the Treasure Spring Pavilion held a trap.
Ye Kong had also been mulling this over. Xu You already knew he was a cultivator, yet still said he’d wait on the Yellow Springs road. Could there be someone even more formidable than a cultivator there?
“The arrow is on the string and must be released. I’m going now.” Ye Kong quickly made his decision. He’d always been someone bold to the heavens, unafraid of hardship and danger.
“Then Eighth Young Master must act carefully.” Lu Jun knew well he’d already boarded this pirate ship. The only plan now was to walk this one road to the end, come darkness or not. This was his choice. Right or wrong, it couldn’t be changed and couldn’t be regretted.
Walking on the road to the Treasure Spring Pavilion, the bright moon was just like the night he’d arrived, equally round, equally bright, equally hanging in the sky like a round table.
But Ye Kong was no longer that worthless youth. He now had the capital to survive on this continent. He also had dreams.
This past year on Cangnan Continent, he’d always been passively resisting.
Struggling against evil servants, struggling against his brothers, struggling against the Dragon-Snake Gang.
But now, he would attack proactively for the first time, trampling the Dragon-Snake Gang’s Fan Jiulong under his feet!
The Treasure Spring Pavilion was the largest brothel in Southern Capital City. Though Ye Kong had never been here, he’d heard about it more than once from those personal soldiers guarding the ancestral hall. However, those soldiers’ wages weren’t enough for the expenses here. When they talked about the Treasure Spring Pavilion, they all used expressions of longing and envy.
They discussed how beautiful the women at the Treasure Spring Pavilion were, how seductive, how you couldn’t walk once you saw them. Once upon a time, Ye Kong also looked forward to coming here someday, throwing handfuls of silver onto women. But he hadn’t expected his first visit would be to kill someone.
Walking along the most prosperous street, he discovered Cangnan Continent did have nightlife. Carriages and horses still streamed before the wine houses. From afar he could see the Treasure Spring Pavilion’s strung red lanterns with golden characters. Men and women in fine clothes laughed as they walked by. Small stalls and vendors still peddled their wares…
Walking along the main road, Ye Kong didn’t enter the Treasure Spring Pavilion through the main door. With his plain green robe, he’d probably be blocked outside by snobbish servants. Besides, he truly had no money to spend here.
He simply walked into the small alley behind the Treasure Spring Pavilion and took out his last Invisibility Talisman. He was somewhat reluctant to use it. You had to know this talisman might well be his final life-saving capital.
But he still recited the incantation and then stuck it on himself.
According to Xu You’s intelligence, Little Peach Red’s room was in the innermost room on the third floor of the Treasure Spring. Ye Kong swaggered his broad shoulders into the Treasure Spring Pavilion, while those men and women all turned blind eyes to him.
The lower floor had a stage where a scantily dressed woman was singing some little tune. Below sat a large pile of men, shouting enthusiastically with high spirits.
There really were quite a few beauties. This was the first time Ye Kong had seen so many beauties since coming to Cangnan Continent. He inevitably felt his spirit floating and thoughts wandering. However, he also knew his purpose for this trip. He forcibly suppressed his stirrings and walked toward the third floor.
“Screw his immortal ancestors, nearly killed me. After taking out Fan Jiulong, I’ll use talismans to find some fun.” Ye Kong muttered to himself as he walked toward the last room on the third floor.
Sure enough, four tall guards stood before the innermost room on the third floor, standing straight as iron towers.
Ye Kong carefully observed and discovered those four guys’ pants were quite normal. It seemed these fellows listened outside every day until they’d become immune. Who knew if they’d all been listening until they became eunuchs.
Ye Kong walked over. Those four tower-like men had no awareness at all. However, if he pushed open the door and entered, he’d definitely alert them.
But if he killed them, he’d inevitably alarm those inside. Ye Kong stood across from them, not knowing how to choose. He somewhat regretted not drawing a few Wall-Penetrating Talismans this morning. Just as Ye Kong hadn’t made up his mind, an opportunity appeared. A wiry, thin man hurried over.
“Is the gang leader in? I have something to report.” The thin man said to the guards.
“Oh, it’s Elder Lu. Right now? Is it urgent?” The guards were quite polite to this Elder Lu. It seemed this skinny old man held some position in the Dragon-Snake Gang.
“It’s urgent.”
“Then please wait a moment.” The guard also knew the gang leader was having fun inside. Disturbing him might bring bad luck, but delaying urgent matters would be an even greater offense.
“Knock knock knock.” After knocking, a shrill male voice soon came asking impatiently, “What is it?”
“Elder Lu has come,” the guard answered.
“Oh, tonight’s matter didn’t go well?” That shrill voice was also extraordinarily shrewd, deducing from Elder Lu’s arrival that things had changed.
“The target proved tricky. The detailed situation must be reported to the gang leader face to face.” Elder Lu said with lowered head.
“Tricky?” After a questioning voice, the door creaked open. A fat, white man with no beard under his chin appeared.
That’s right! Fan Jiulong! Ye Kong’s heart tightened. He squeezed the paper-cutting knife in his palm, but he still suppressed the impulse to strike.
“Come in and speak.” Fan Jiulong wore a white undergarment. He’d apparently just climbed up from the bed. He brought Elder Lu into the room.
And Ye Kong took advantage of the door closing to slip inside.
Upon entering, Ye Kong got a shock. He saw another man in the inner room also wearing a white undergarment, sitting by a small round table drinking water. Behind him, the bed had pink curtains with a woman’s movements faintly visible inside.
Were they just having a threesome? Ye Kong nearly fainted. Fan Jiulong actually had this kind of hobby. Looking again at the man drinking tea, he was slightly thinner than Fan Jiulong but also quite fat. The two had somewhat similar facial features.
Fan Jiushe!
Ye Kong hadn’t expected this person to appear. Xu You’s intelligence hadn’t mentioned it. However, Ye Kong didn’t think much of it. Since they were both here, he’d just take out both.
Fan Jiulong sat beside his brother and also poured himself a cup of tea. After taking a sip, only then did he ask Elder Lu about the situation.
It turned out this Elder Lu had come precisely about Ye Kong’s matter. Those gang members had fled back to the gang in panic, and the one in charge was Elder Lu. Hearing that Ye Kong was an immortal, he immediately arranged for people to investigate near the Lu family home. Discovering the house was already empty with everyone gone, he rushed to report. That’s why he arrived one step behind Ye Kong.
“That kid’s an immortal? Didn’t Ye Hai say he was a fool?” Fan Jiulong muttered.
Now Ye Kong understood why Ye Hai had that expression when he encountered him this morning. Sure enough, officials and bandits colluded. At first, after a few small thugs from the Dragon-Snake Gang died, they’d planned to let it go. But then they set up this poisonous ambush trap. It must have been at Ye Hai’s instigation.
Fan Jiulong asked again, “What kind of immortal arts did the kid use? How do you know he’s an immortal?”
While Elder Lu was replying, Ye Kong slowly approached Fan Jiulong. He made his footsteps as light as possible, his breathing gradually calming. Though he’d already killed quite a few people today, this was his first assassination. His heart held a wild, frenzied excitement.
Closer, getting closer and closer. Ye Kong could not only hear his own heartbeat, he could even feel Fan Jiulong’s fat back rising and falling with his breathing.
Five meters, four meters, three meters…
Ye Kong squeezed the knife in his hand again. Two more steps and he could strike.
The two sitting men had absolutely no awareness. Fan Jiulong listened absorbedly to Elder Lu’s report, while Fan Jiushe lowered his head, pinching his small teacup, as if asleep.
But just then, the red curtains parted. An enchanting peach blossom face appeared. Lips and teeth opened, a crisp voice rang out. “Immortal? How can there be so many immortals? Jiushe…”
“Get back in there!” Fan Jiushe, who seemed to be asleep, suddenly roared at the woman.
This roar startled Fan Jiulong, Elder Lu, and even Ye Kong. The woman shrank back into the gauze curtains, weeping softly.
“Little brother, what are you shouting about?” Fan Jiulong apparently doted on this woman and asked unhappily.
“I just feel women shouldn’t interfere in gang matters.” Fan Jiushe smiled awkwardly, then said to Elder Lu with feigned composure, “Continue speaking.”
Fan Jiulong snorted with some confusion. “I haven’t seen you act like this before.” Then he continued listening absorbedly to Elder Lu’s recounting of events.
But Ye Kong became alert. He’d been paying attention to Fan Jiulong all along, but looking at Fan Jiushe again, he discovered something wasn’t right.
This guy was very tense. That roar at the woman just now had exposed the tension and fear in his heart.
But after roaring, Fan Jiushe calmed down again. He sat quietly side by side with Fan Jiulong, one hand still steadily holding his small teacup.
Probably just didn’t get enough fun earlier. Never mind him. The Invisibility Talisman has a time limit. Quick battle, quick victory. Ye Kong thought, advancing two more steps. His hand emerged from his sleeve, a knife gleaming with cold light raised high…
Success was in sight, but just at this moment, Fan Jiushe suddenly moved. His fat body was like an agile civet cat. One hand pushed aside Fan Jiulong beside him, while his other hand dropped the teacup, replaced by a ball of red flames in his palm.
Everything happened in a flash of lightning. Ye Kong had no time to react at all. He just saw Fan Jiushe’s mocking face and the fireball he flung over!
Not good! He’d discovered me long ago! He’s a cultivator! This is Fireball Technique! Why did Xu You say that!
All the information rapidly flooded Ye Kong’s brain, but most importantly, how to dodge this killing strike!
Too close! No way to avoid it! Take it head-on? But that’s Fireball Technique. Getting hit means certain death!
What Ye Kong hated most was the Five Elements Wanderer who’d left the Five Elements Ascension Scripture. Why didn’t he introduce a few low-level techniques in the scripture? If he knew Fireball Technique, he wouldn’t need to take this risk.
But complaining was no solution. What he needed to think about now was how to dodge this strike!
Everything happened in an instant. All thoughts were also in an instant. But in the instant the fireball struck him, what appeared in his mind was actually the martial arts from the Shadow Jade.
Without time to judge, he reflexively leaped up, gathered his qi, leaned back, and flipped his body in a flowing motion, completed in one breath. Though hasty, it was graceful, just like a feather in the air landing on the ground.
“Boom!” The fireball blasted a huge hole in the wooden wall.
