Chapter 59: Convinced

“Damn it to hell! Can’t even drink in peace!” Ye Kong was fuming inside.

It wasn’t that he was afraid to go out – it was that there were too many people outside. He didn’t want to show his face. Last time he caused that scene outside Treasure Spring Pavilion, his reputation as a lecher had already spread throughout the city. If everyone saw him again, his hobby of chasing tail would be set in stone.

Brother here is still a virgin! How can I let myself get labeled as a brothel regular? Ye Kong naturally refused and stubbornly stayed inside.

If he wouldn’t come out, naturally someone would come in. Two nimble bailiffs carrying a wooden cangue and iron shackles, cursing under their breath, strode in with their black pointed boots.

Between the outer and inner rooms hung a pink gauze curtain. The curtain was half-raised, revealing a man and woman still sitting at the table drinking inside.

When the bailiff looked in, he flew into a rage. He threw open the curtain, puffed out his chest, widened his eyes, and bellowed, “You’ve got some nerve…”

He had wanted to say “You’ve got some nerve!” but only got two words out before he saw clearly who was sitting at the table.

This person had left too deep an impression on him. He had once knelt trembling before this man while thousands of people roared in unison, “Execute them!”

That scene was so unforgettable to this bailiff that he still had nightmares about seeing this person. The other bailiffs were much the same, which is why they had all given Ye Kong a nickname: “Plague God” – whoever provoked him got destroyed.

Now suddenly face to face with the Plague God, the bailiff’s whole body jolted like he’d been electrocuted. He shuddered, and the rest of his words died in his throat.

Ye Kong looked at him standing there like an idiot in the doorway and laughed mockingly. He took the ox-eye white jade cup that Little Oriole had filled for him, drained it in one gulp, then looked back at the bailiff to find the guy’s brain was still frozen.

“You’ve got some what? Say it! You charged in here posing dramatically and then just froze. What, playing performance art?” Ye Kong asked impatiently.

The bailiff immediately snapped out of it. First he deflated his puffed-up chest, retracting his intimidating aura, then plastered a smile across his face and grinned at Ye Kong with protruding teeth. Looking back, he saw that the bastard who came in with him had already fled without a trace.

Damn it, disloyal prick. Uh… guess I should run too, avoid the Plague God. The bailiff turned to flee, but Ye Kong’s voice came from behind: “Hey! Did you leave your ears at home? I’m asking you – you’ve got some what?”

“You’ve got some…” The bailiff wouldn’t dare say “nerve” even on pain of death. His eyes darted around until he found an answer and said with an ingratiating smile: “Eighth Young Master, this humble one was trying to say – you’ve got some huge fly in here.”

Little Oriole was not pleased to hear this. “Although our Treasure Spring Pavilion isn’t a restaurant, we maintain safety and hygiene standards with clean food. How could there possibly be flies?”

“Then I must have seen wrong. Probably a mosquito…” the bailiff said with a smile so strained his face was cramping.

But Little Oriole still wasn’t happy. “Although our Treasure Spring Pavilion isn’t an inn, we maintain safety and hygiene standards with disinfection and mosquito control. How could there possibly be mosquitoes?”

“Then it must be a bedbug…”

“Although our Treasure Spring Pavilion isn’t…”

“Thud!” The bailiff couldn’t take it anymore. He dropped to his knees and kowtowed frantically. “This humble one was talking about himself being the bedbug, Eighth Young Master. This humble one didn’t know you were here and offended your esteemed presence. Please spare this humble one…”

“Hehe, calling yourself a bedbug, hahaha.” Little Oriole couldn’t help laughing at the bailiff’s groveling behavior.

Ye Kong had no intention of bothering with such a small fry. He waved his hand dismissively. “Then go get your head bedbug and bring him in here to see me.”

Outside, Iron Bailiff was at his wit’s end. He had already received the report. He never imagined it would actually be that little bastard Plague God Ye inside. Just what he was afraid of.

Iron Bailiff then wondered – could it be that Plague God Ye deliberately switched rooms to drink as part of someone’s trap to harm him?

Either way, Iron Bailiff was already scared. He decided to withdraw his troops. Although it would be humiliating in front of all these eyes, and Feng Siniang’s mocking, provocative gaze was quite cutting, he couldn’t worry about that anymore. That Plague God inside – he really couldn’t afford to provoke him. Better to avoid him while he could.

But who knew the bailiff who had charged in first would come back and whisper in his ear that Plague God Ye wanted to see him.

No choice. Even if he was afraid, he had to go. Steeling himself, he entered the room. Actually, Ye Kong had summoned him at Little Oriole’s request, just to give him a warning to stop harassing Treasure Spring Pavilion.

How would Iron Bailiff dare say a word? He didn’t even dare breathe hard. After Ye Kong finished speaking, he agreed a hundred times over. When he came out of the room and wiped the sweat from his forehead, he thought to himself, “Thank goodness the Plague God didn’t blow up today. Heaven truly protects me.”

Iron Bailiff couldn’t care about everyone’s stares anymore. Completely different from his arrogance coming in, he weakly waved his hand and said listlessly, “A misunderstanding. Return to the office.”

Old Moneybags Qian was enjoying the flowers in high spirits when he suddenly heard Iron Bailiff speak and said, “Officer Iron, I clearly saw a wanted criminal of the court inside. How can this be a misunderstanding?”

Iron Bailiff had fire with nowhere to vent it. Qian Youcai delivering himself on a platter made his rage soar even higher. He cursed, “Old beast, you dared scheme against me!”

“I didn’t – ow!” Before Qian Youcai figured out what was happening, Iron Bailiff kicked him down the stairs. He rolled all the way down to the main hall floor, still shouting, “Officer Iron, I didn’t!”

Iron Bailiff acted as if he couldn’t hear at all. Leading the bailiffs downstairs, he strode past and out the door.

Even Old Moneybags Qian’s nephew didn’t bother with him. Make me go provoke that Plague God? Damn it, you’ve screwed me over.

“Eighth Young Master, did you already hear the wind and know early on that Iron Bailiff would bring people here?”

“No, I’ve been with you all afternoon. Did you see anyone come tip me off?”

Only now did the Lu brothers understand. So when Eighth Young Master kept saying to wait, he was waiting for Iron Bailiff all along.

Actually, Ye Kong’s situation was pure coincidence. When he said to wait, he was waiting for Old Ancestor Yellow Springs to wake up. How would he know he’d end up waiting for Iron Bailiff to arrive?

Ye Kong thought this way, but how would others know? The Lu brothers looked at him with even more admiration and awe in their eyes.

“Eighth Young Master truly has divine strategies and wonderful calculations. I, Lu Jun, am completely convinced today.” Though Lu Jun was taller than Ye Kong, his gaze was clearly looking up in reverence.

“Convinced, completely convinced.” Lu Yi hastily nodded as well.
