Chapter 54: The Starvation Tree

“This… what’s mercury for?” Xiaohong asked again.

Old Ancestor Yellow Springs kept his eyes closed, pretending to sleep, but his ears were actually perked up listening!

After half a month of living together, he’d discovered this kid was getting more and more mysterious. From the cultivation technique that guaranteed ascension which had initially shocked him, to the book in this kid’s mind, to hearing this guy also knew ancient talisman arts.

One shock after another kept coming, making Old Ancestor Yellow Springs increasingly fascinated by this kid. Tell me, how could this fourteen-year-old brat have so many secrets?

Ye Kong smiled as he picked up his brush. “Xiaohong, didn’t I tell you last time that I can cure illnesses? Now let me show you this young master’s skills by treating Little Qin.”

Under Xiaohong’s and Old Ancestor Yellow Springs’ astonished gazes, Ye Kong quickly drew a Wind-Expelling Talisman. Then he went to Lu Qin’s room, formed a hand seal, and struck the talisman onto Lu Qin’s forehead.

“Does it work?” Old Ancestor Yellow Springs asked.

“Whether it works or not, we’ll know in a bit.” Ye Kong smiled as he sat down at the table and finally started eating.

Not only was Old Ancestor Yellow Springs skeptical, Xiaohong was extremely doubtful too. Eighth Young Master hadn’t prescribed any medicine or used acupuncture – he’d just casually drawn on paper, then burned that paper on the patient’s face.

Could an illness be cured like this? This kind of treatment method was completely unheard of. If it could actually cure illness, that would be absolutely absurd.

But who knew that talisman healing was actually immediate? Lu Qin had drunk medicine for two days without much improvement, yet this talisman had only been on for a short while when she miraculously cooled down. The unnatural flush on her face faded, and her coughing stopped.

“Eighth Young Master, it really works!” Xiaohong was overjoyed, her eyes shining as she looked at Lu Qin.

As soon as Lu Qin’s illness improved, she wanted to get out of bed, but Ye Kong pushed her back down. “Little Qin, although you’re better now, your body is still very weak. Make sure to rest more.”

After getting Lu Qin to lie down, Ye Kong came out of her room. Old Ancestor Yellow Springs kept chattering noisily in his mind. “What kind of method is this? Is this also a talisman? The character symbols on it are so peculiar – why has this old ancestor never seen this kind of talisman before?”

If a moment ago Old Ancestor Yellow Springs had been half-skeptical when Ye Kong said he knew how to make several high-grade spirit talismans, now he completely believed it. Never mind anything else, just this kid’s Wind-Expelling Talisman was completely unheard of on this continent. If he had other miraculous talismans, that would be perfectly normal.

“Little brother, Fellow Daoist Ye, younger brother, hehe, just teach this old ancestor!” Old Ancestor Yellow Springs was being shameless again, wanting to learn.

Ye Kong said gloomily, “Immortal cultivators don’t get sick anyway. What do you want to learn this for?”

Old Ancestor Yellow Springs laughed. “By learning the basics, you can understand more profound things! I want to learn from the beginning.”

This old bastard sure had a black heart. Ye Kong said impatiently, “Not teaching. There’s no benefit in it for me.”

Old Ancestor Yellow Springs said angrily, “Who says there’s no benefit? I’ll give you some benefits right now!”

Ye Kong became interested and asked, “Oh? What benefits? Tell me.”

“You currently have to come out every five days of closed-door cultivation, which is too troublesome. This old ancestor will help you refine some Inedia Pills. Then you won’t have to worry about eating.”

“Inedia Pills? That sounds great. Are they difficult to refine?” Ye Kong thought this was a good idea. With Inedia Pills, he could cultivate for long periods.

Old Ancestor Yellow Springs cackled. “Not hard to refine. Just prepare some millet seeds [visit our site]and find some fruit from the Starvation Tree, and this old ancestor can help you make pills.”

“Starvation Tree? What the hell is that?” Ye Kong asked.

Old Ancestor Yellow Springs cackled. “So there are things even you don’t know! You really are something, kid. Things nobody else knows, you know. Things everybody else knows, you’re like an idiot about.”

“Everybody else knows?” Ye Kong turned to ask Xiaohong who was following behind. “What’s a Starvation Tree? Do you know?”

“Starvation Tree?” Xiaohong was startled, then covered her mouth and laughed. “That’s the Starvation Flower! There are these flowers in our manor’s back garden.” After Xiaohong finished speaking, her expression dimmed a bit as she lowered her head. “Of course you wealthy young masters wouldn’t know about Starvation Flowers.”

“Oh? Why not?” Ye Kong pressed.

Xiaohong explained, “The fruit that grows on Starvation Trees can be used as food. That kind of food is extremely hard and solid. After picking it and soaking it in water for a few days, it can be eaten as grain. And you only need to eat a little bit to feel full.”

Ye Kong said, “Ah, that’s a good thing! Does it taste good? I’ve never eaten it.”

Xiaohong smiled. “That’s because you’re a wealthy young master who doesn’t know about common people’s suffering. Starvation Tree fruit is extremely unpleasant to eat – rough beyond measure, getting stuck in your throat so you can barely swallow it. It also has a bitter, astringent taste. Although it can fill your stomach, it’s hard to get down. Even pigs won’t eat it! Generally only in years of great famine, when people are so hungry they have no choice, will they eat that stuff.”

“No wonder it’s called starvation grain. Is it poisonous?” Ye Kong asked again.

“Not poisonous.”

Ye Kong didn’t quite believe it. “If it’s not poisonous, it can’t be that unpalatable. This stuff fills you up easily, so it must have high density with lots of fiber. If you chew it thoroughly, it should be fine, right?”

After speaking, Ye Kong waved his hand. “Take me to see it. I want to taste what this thing actually tastes like.”

“Okay.” Xiaohong led the way.

Passing through a long corridor, they could see a riot of purples and reds in the distance, beautiful beyond measure. A breeze blew by, carrying a faint floral fragrance in the air.

“What are you laughing at?” Ye Kong suddenly noticed Xiaohong giggling as she walked.

“Laughing at how a wealthy young master doesn’t understand poor people’s hardships and actually wants to voluntarily try Starvation Tree fruit. You’ll see soon enough how awful it tastes.” Xiaohong covered her mouth as she laughed.

“I’m a wealthy young master?” Ye Kong pointed at his own nose and said innocently, “If an outsider said that, it would be understandable. But you’ve personally witnessed the miserable life Mother and I lived. How can you say I’m a wealthy young master?”

Xiaohong countered, “Although you lived a hard life before, have you ever tasted hunger and cold? Those bitter days when fields lie barren everywhere, corpses of the starved litter the ground, and food can’t be found anywhere – that’s true suffering.”

Ye Kong had wanted to ask back “Have you?” But seeing Xiaohong’s expression, it seemed she had experienced it. Otherwise her feelings wouldn’t run so deep.

Soon, Ye Kong saw the Starvation Trees. These trees were indeed tall, somewhat similar to coconut trees back on Earth. No wonder they planted these trees in the garden – they were tall and straight with a pleasing appearance. The tree crowns had bright red large flowers. With many Starvation Trees planted together, from a distance they looked like a red cloud.

“So tall!” Standing under the tree, Ye Kong looked up to see round, green fruits among the red flowers.

“Yes, they’re not easy to pick either.” Xiaohong also tilted her head up. This posture made the two peaks on her chest appear even more beautifully prominent.

“Kid, better not bother looking. Without using magic techniques, you can’t reach the fruit up there. Just wait for this old ancestor to pick them tonight.” Old Ancestor Yellow Springs, who’d been silent, finally spoke up.

“Tch, you think I’m really just for show?” Ye Kong sneered, centered his body and drew a breath. Then with a clear whistle, he suddenly shot up from the ground like a swimming dragon. His movements were incredibly vigorous. In midair he gathered his qi again, twisted his body sideways in a rotation, and rose another ten feet.

His long robe fluttered down as Ye Kong landed steadily on a high branch of the Starvation Tree.

“Wow, so cool!” Looking up at Ye Kong like a heavenly deity, Xiaohong’s large eyes grew even more tender with hazy affection.

But Old Ancestor Yellow Springs cried out in shock. “Shadow Dance! That’s Shadow Dance! Who… exactly are you?!”

Ye Kong knew Old Ancestor Yellow Springs had been hunted by Shadow Clan people, so he explained, “Don’t worry, I’m not from the Shadow Clan. I just comprehended the martial art from a Shadow Jade by chance.”

“Oh, so that’s it.” Old Ancestor Yellow Springs nodded, finally relaxing a bit.

“Eighth Young Master, can I come up?” Xiaohong called from below, making her hands into a megaphone shape.

“Of course you can.” Ye Kong smiled slightly, patted his storage pouch, and an ancient blue-green vine appeared in his hand.

Old Ancestor Yellow Springs snorted and cursed, “Using Imprisonment Cage Grass vines to flirt with girls – you really thought of everything.”

“Eighth Young Master! I, I can’t climb up!” Xiaohong held up her green skirt and circled the vine several times, but still didn’t dare climb.

“Stupid!” Ye Kong called down. “Sit in the middle of the vine and I’ll pull you up!”

“Hehe.” Xiaohong giggled, lifted her hairpin skirt, and sat on the vine. Holding the green vines on both sides with her hands, she felt herself rising higher and higher.

“Hehe, haha, it’s just like swinging on a swing! I’ve never swung this high before.” Xiaohong’s clear laughter echoed in the air like little bells. Her small feet in white shoes kicked happily at the edge of her skirt, as happy as a child.

“Wow, so high.” Standing on a horizontal branch of the tree, Xiaohong looked at the distant ground below. She couldn’t help but turn pale, her calves trembling.

“Don’t worry, nothing will happen if you hold onto me.” Ye Kong reached out to grab her wrist.

“Sister Xiaohong, you’ve learned quite a few of my secrets today, haven’t you?” Ye Kong suddenly drew in a cold breath and said in a deep voice.

Xiaohong seemed not to sense any dangerous atmosphere at all. She buried her face in Ye Kong’s embrace and said softly, “Eighth Young Master, Xiaohong will never have any intention of harming you.”

Ye Kong’s eyes softened considerably. He continued, “If you keep this up, you’ll inevitably learn even more of my secrets in the future. I think you should go back and report to your master that you shouldn’t come prying anymore.”

“Xiaohong is willing to keep Eighth Young Master’s secrets. What Little Qin can do, I can do too!” Xiaohong spoke softly, like talking in a dream, but with genuine feeling.

“All right then.” Ye Kong released Xiaohong and helped her sit down. Then he plucked a large Starvation Tree flower and placed it on her hair like a red hat.

“Hehe, Eighth Young Master, does it look good? Today is the happiest day of Xiaohong’s life.”

“It looks good.” Ye Kong smiled faintly, then suddenly said, “Xiaohong, since you’re determined to keep my secrets, let me tell you – I’m actually a… cultivator.”
